Despite receiving nearly 15,000 calls – and untold email messages and tweets – Governor Deal bowed to National Rifle Association (NRA) pressure and signed HB 280, the “Campus Carry” bill.
Widely opposed by Georgia college and university presidents, faculty, staff and students, this deeply flawed legislation allows concealed carry on college and university campuses throughout the state of Georgia.
The law fails to provide a methodology for identifying when and where high school students joint enrollment students are on campus nor does it detail how the exclusion zones will be established and communicated.
It contains ambiguous wording about offices and rooms used for disciplinary matters, and does not define who is to implement the law and under what authority.
For Progressives, the answer is clear: we must elect lawmakers to the GA Senate and House who will work to overturn this flawed legislation and make our Georgia campuses a place where education is not subject to the potential of gun violence.
