A great way to help homeless in this ATL cold. ❄️❄️
George Chidi is an activist, and one of the major issues he works on is homelessness. Yesterday he put out an SOS call: temperatures this week are cold enough to kill unsheltered people. The city has opened warming stations, but many of the homeless have no way to get to one.
George's original post was to ask for volunteers to drive homeless people to a warming station. The greatest need is at night.
Now he's come up with a solution that involves mere money. Please think about how cold it is at night. If you could save a life just by donating enough money to buy a Lyft ride, wouldn't you want to do that?
From George's post today:
"Lyft is a member of Central Atlanta Progress. We're working with a charitable transportation partner of theirs, Common Courtesy, to install a Lyft account on cell phones used by the Ambassador Force. The account bills directly to an account for Common Courtesy, which covers the cost of the trip from under a bridge to a shelter.
"Common Courtesy began as a way to help poor, elderly medical patients get to and from hospitals. We're repurposing the infrastructure of it to get people to warming shelters. It's a dead-simple, cheap solution to the problem...
"It also solves a longer-term issue we've had expediently getting people seeking services downtown to the Gateway Center. People experiencing homelessness often can't follow directions to walk to a shelter, or aren't prepared to cart their worldly possessions there. Immediate transportation is a barrier to service. This helps eliminate that barrier."
Please donate a ride or two to Common Courtesy. Save someone from freezing to death.
